Register Your Business with Family and Medical Leave Insurance (FAMLI)
Maryland employers must prepare for the state’s Family and Medical Leave Insurance program, known as FAMLI. If your business has at least one employee who works in Maryland, you are required to register.
What Is FAMLI?
FAMLI will provide eligible employees with paid, job-protected leave for important family and health needs. Beginning January 1, 2028, eligible employees may receive up to 12 weeks of paid leave to:
- Welcome a new child.
- Care for their own serious health condition.
- Care for a family member.
- Address urgent family needs related to a military deployment.
Employer contributions begin January 1, 2027. Employers may withhold up to half of the required contribution from employees through payroll deductions or may apply to use an approved private plan.
Does My Business Need to Register?
All employers with at least one employee who works in Maryland must register with FAMLI. There are no exceptions to the registration requirement under state law.
Each business should register only once for each federal Employer Identification Number.
