Step 7 Prepare Your Business for Family and Medical Leave Insurance (FAMLI)
If you are starting a business that will employ at least one person in Maryland, you will need to register with Maryland’s Family and Medical Leave Insurance program, known as FAMLI.
What Is FAMLI?
FAMLI will provide eligible employees with paid, job-protected leave for important family and health needs. Beginning January 1, 2028, eligible employees may receive up to 12 weeks of paid leave to:
- Welcome a new child.
- Care for their own serious health condition.
- Care for a family member.
- Address urgent family needs related to a military deployment.
Employer contributions begin January 1, 2027.
Will My New Business Need to Register?
All employers with at least one employee who works in Maryland must register with FAMLI. There are no exceptions to the registration requirement under state law.
Before registering, your business will need:
- A federal Employer Identification Number.
- A Resident Agent.
- A physical business address.
- A business email address separate from the Authorized Officer's email address.
What Do I Need to Register?
The Authorized Officer completing the registration should have:
Account and Identity Information
- An existing Login.gov account, or an email address and phone number to create one.
- A Social Security number.
- A driver’s license or state identification card.
Business Information
- Employer Identification Number.
- Legal business name and any “doing business as” name.
- NAICS code.
- Physical business address.
- Mailing address, if different.
- A business email address that is different from the Authorized Officer’s email address.
Authorized Officer Information
- Full name.
- Job title.
- Work email address.
- Work phone number.
Resident Agent Information
- Name.
- Physical address.
- Email address.
- Phone number.
Register with FAMLI
Once your business has the required information, register with FAMLI.
After registration, the Maryland Department of Labor will provide information about reporting, contributions, plan options, and other employer responsibilities.
